A plan that is thought through and written down is a vision that is clear, sound, and executable. The first step in harnessing your own personal POWER is constructing a road map to your goal. Always “begin with the end in mind”—Define what success looks like for you. Will you be successful when you’ve landed a new job or launched a new product? Or will it be more abstract—finally feeling like you’re being true to yourself? Document your definition of “success” and set a date to achieve it. Then, work backwards from your goal and outline the tasks you must complete in order to realize your goal.
The will, desire, or drive to succeed....is the key that will unlock the door to personal excellence. The journey to success, however, is littered with obstacles and roadblocks. The key is to acknowledge, understand, and accept this truth. Do not allow setbacks to force you onto a detour that leads to quitting. When faced with an obstacle, ask 2 questions: #1 “Why am I stuck?” (identify the roadblock you have encountered) and #2, “Who or what can help me through this roadblock?” Just talking to someone or asking for help can sometimes move you beyond an obstacle. Other times, a simple walk in the park or listening to a podcast to distract yourself for a while can help you achieve clarity.
No person is an island. One hardly ever arrives at success alone. As you start to execute your plan, identifying resources is crucial and other talented, insightful, and supportive individuals will be your most valuable resources. Early in her life, Crystal instinctually learned how to seek both personal and professional help. Reaching out to others with expertise has made all the difference in her life and it will in yours as well.
If you master the first three steps, you will be well on your way to excelling as a leader. Learning how to plan, work through obstacles while executing the plan, and working smarter by tapping into your team of resources, are common skills of all successful leaders.
Don’t forget to embrace the journey. Success, like everything that matters, takes time and patience and the path is never linear. To keep your vision clear, you must celebrate and embrace the small victories along the way. Those triumphs will be leading you to your true self.
